1Just Like an All Terrain Vehicle - Which Goes In Circles
By The Big Guy
I had a Polaris cleaner for 11 years and it seemed at least once a year I would have to take it in for about $100 worth of repairs.

Growing tired of this, I looked at alternatives. The Polaris 3900 @ $699 got ripped on Amazon and by my pool guy, so I went with Kreepy.

Pros: It maneuvers extremely well in my in-ground pool, does not tip like my Polaris and its sweeper hose STAYS IN THE POOL and does not squirt water over my house, dog, guests, etc. The list is $499 but I got a $100 rebate. Amazon sells it about $50 cheaper.....but I wouldn't have gotten the pool shop guy's insight and recommendations.

Also, a one year warranty, and my pool guy offered to do a "maintenance check" before the warranty expired to replace any worn parts under contract.

Cons: The hose that comes with the unit is like 40 miles long. It had to be cut to fit my pool and the instructions are waaaay to complicated for me to do. Fortunately my pool shop offered to do it for free.

I will try to follow up with this for a long-term review as well. In the meantime, my pool's open!

6/14/11 Update:

I returned the unit to the retailer. After trying to get the unit to randomly scrub my pool, all it did was go in circles which tangled the hose. The retailer called the MFG who sent out this guy who hmmmed and hawwed and left, without replacing the unit, saying "they all do this". Bull crap. I got my money back and went back to my Polaris which, while expensive to repair, does the job for me and goes all over the pool, unlike this unit. Everyone scratches their head, but the Mfg did no follow up visit. Retailer not happy. Polaris grinning.

1One Big Problem
By Ian the moral
This unit works fine, one BIG fault. We have a large pool with two sets of steps, our legend gets stuck all the time at the steps. Well you'd think it would reverse itself on resistance, but no it reverses on timing about two minutes later. So we have replaced tires every month. They have a front deflector at $53, well pricey but worth it. Ah, but not available, believe me, I tried. If you have a pool with any edges or sharp corners do NOT buy this machine.

4Would be great if back-up feature worked
By Alex Diaz
Worked great for about 6 months, then the auto back-up broke; it was stuck in the on position so the thing was backing up 24-7. It was still under warrantly so a Pentair rep came out to replace the faulty back-up device. Four months later, the back-up device is broken again, but now instead of it being in back-up mode 24-7, it never backs up at all. As a result, the little machine gets stuck up against my steps and spins it's little wheels in the same spot for hours. When it's working, it does a great job, but the back-up mechanism is (in my experience) junk.

Oh, and even though the thing supposedly has a 1 year warranty, the Pentair representative that came out to replace it said that if it breaks again, I am on my own; the warranty only covers one repair/replacement. It sounded like he knew the thing was going to break again. =/

10/17/2012 Update: I took the back-up valve apart and it looks like the gears were just jammed. They appeared to not be lined up 100% correctly, causing the jam. I will change my review to 4 stars, since the unit (when the backup valve is working) really does a great job of keeping the bottom of the pool clean.
